Key Responsibilities:

  • Vocal Coaching: Provide vocal training and guidance to the cast, focusing on proper vocal technique, breath control, pitch accuracy, diction, and vocal health.
  • Rehearsals: Lead vocal rehearsals, both individually and with groups, to ensure that each actor understands and executes their vocal parts correctly.
  • Harmonization: Teach harmonies and ensure that ensemble singing is tight and balanced.
  • Vocal Arrangements: Collaborate with the Musical Director to create or refine vocal arrangements, ensuring they align with the musical score and director's vision.
  • Character Interpretation: Work with performers to convey emotion and character through their singing, enhancing the storytelling of the musical.
  • Vocal Warm-ups: Lead vocal warm-ups before rehearsals and performances to ensure the cast’s voices are ready for singing.
  • Health and Safety: Ensure the vocal health of the cast by teaching proper vocal care, monitoring for signs of strain, and advising on how to maintain vocal stamina throughout the show’s run.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the Director and Musical Director to align the vocal performances with the overall artistic vision of the production.
  • Problem-Solving: Address any vocal challenges individual performers may face and provide tailored exercises or strategies to improve their singing.
  • Performance Monitoring: Attend performances to monitor vocal performances and provide feedback for continued improvement.

Required Skills:

  • Strong understanding of vocal techniques and pedagogy
  • Proficient in music theory and sight-reading
  • Ability to teach and arrange harmonies
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills
  • Collaborative mindset with directors, musicians, and performers
  • Ability to work with singers of varying skill levels
  • Experience in musical theater

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music, Vocal Performance, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Experience as a vocal coach or director in theater, musical theater, or choral settings
  • Knowledge of various musical genres and vocal styles
  • Strong piano skills are highly desirable
